I had a 2000 142 error on my Dell Inspiron. The laptop was working fine and I only discovered a problem during a routine scan disk with recovery of bad sectors. It would stick at 54% in stage 5 of 5. After a few attempts ,it would hold at stage 4. They had me pull out the cd/dvd disc drive and then re-ran the FN power up. Then the error was 2000 146. They gave me a replacement hard drive.
I guess my question is--was this a correct t/s procedure?
Yes, bad sectors are a sign that the hard disk is about to fail sometime in the near future. Scan disk tried fix and lock out these sectors so the system cannot use these areas and move the data from these areas to an unaffected areas on the disk, unfortunately the hard drive's disk surface was so badly damaged it was unable to complete the job.
