Cannot open or copy - parameter is incorrect?

Vivitar ViviCam 5385 Digital Camera

I have one SD card that will not allow me to view the pictures I have taken, or move them over to my computer.  When I try to open the file from the camera folder, it says "no preview available" and when I try to copy them to my hard drive, I get the message, "Cannot copy [filename]: the parameter is incorrect".  I can see the files are there, but cannot view thumbnails or move them over.  When I look at them on the camera (not connected to the PC and in view mode), I can see them just fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The new camera card I just bought even after I formatted it still reads"Card Error"on the monitor. Is there something else I can do before concluding my camera not working correctly or that I bought the wrong card.
    Thanks

I have the same problem, but I am not using a SD card, I am using a Memory Stick PRO Duo for my PSP.

  • kirkgibson Jul 11, 2008

Memory stick pro says incorrect parameter, can't copy, can't move, but can view pictures only in thumbnails. Any help to save my pictures?

  • surfeechick1 Sep 02, 2008

I am having the same problem with a Olympus camera using a 512mb XD card, however I can view the thumbnails on the camera (through explorer), just not copy or open the files.

It might make a difference that the camera's own viewer (when disconnected from PC) can view the photos perfectly fine.

I bought 16 gb micro sd card for my cell phone, I transfer music and fotos from old card to this new card, first it did OK, all the sudden it stops, saying that could not make a copy of certains files, I click OK,then retried to transfer difference songs to the card, thi time it said: card has writing protection, I push the button up to UNLOCK position, tried again. This time it said: can not copy( files name), parameter is incorrect. I read throught all posts on this page, tried to fix it, but still didnt work, still saying :parameter is incorrect... PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

The holding the sd card in a few seconds and then letting it click out to it's normal position worked for me but since my sd card reader on my eMachine is not a clickable one, I had to bridge with a Kingston sd card reader to USB. Putting the card directly into the pc gave me the same old 'incorrect parameter', 'device not ready' problems. Placing the card in the Kingston reader and then plugging it in, showed no media at all, but clicking the card into the reader and holding, while the reader was plugged into the pc, did the trick. I can now use any sd card and replace and remove files at will, including seeing properties and changing filenames of files on the card. I have the Kingston TravelLite SD/MMC reader if you want to make sure to get a 'clickable' one. Of course, you have to use care when clicking the reader whilst plugged into the machine so you don't break the usb port. I have tried many more technically posh things to solve this maddening problem but this simple thing finally did it. Thanks for the info here!

I cannot believe it but I just solved my problem. I have a Gateway Laptop with the Texas Instruments TIxx21 card reader. At some point it stopped reading SD cards and would give me an Incorrect parameter cannot copy error. I could not copy to or from. My fix is so simple and I hope it works for all of you. I push the card in all the way and wait a few seconds, then I let it click back into position and the images and files work perfectly!

The Best way i recovered my photo's is connect your Camera with your pc. Go to My Computer. Click right on the disk of your Camera and go to properties. Than go to the tab Tools. Than you will see an option for Error-checking. Click on the button Check now... You will be promted to start the error checking. Make sure u select both options --> Automatically fix file system errors and Scan and attemt recovery for bad sectors. After that click start....... See the magic happen ;-)

I've had the same problem trying to transfer pdf files between my desktop and laptop via a memory stick. The desktop will read the stick files, but the laptop gave the error, yet they are both using XP pro. I recopied onto the stick and the laptop then read without error. I can only assume that the laptop driver had a problem with a read error.
Solution: Recopy or try another PC to read it!

I had the same problem using a SD card reader and copying the sat nav data to My Docs, I wanted to make a back up of the sat nav maps. I zipped the folder that threw up the error and copied the zipped file to My Docs. Unzipped it and no problems. Still don't know why it worked the file was only 289mb.

TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM YOU GO THE FILES WHICH IS COPYING IN SD CARD AND MAKE NEW FOLDER ON THE COMPUTER SYSTEM DESKTOP . FIRST ALL FILES IS CUT AND PASTE INTO NEW FOLDER OF DESKTOP THEN CUT THE FOLDER FROM DESKTOP AND PASTE INTO EXTERNAL DRIVE OR SD CARD OR REMOVABLE DISK . SO IT IS COPY EASILY AND VERY SUITABLE WAY . ENJOY ...... AND GIVING MASSAGE TO ME................:)

You just saved me a lot of heartache! I'm at my computer in tears thinking I'd just lost about 400 very important pictures. I just took my SD card out of my computer's reader and into a USB SD reader and all is fine and dandy. Weird! And THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys - big help - I have a Sony DSCT200, had the same "incorrect parameter" issue when trying to copy over

Opening the battery/card cover and pushing in the SD card actually worked - can't believe it, goes against all my technical beliefs! Anyway am going to backup up my successfully transferred pics, then try formatting the card and updating the software, hopefully that'll prevent it happening again in future.
