SOURCE: External Hard Drive -- too much power for my USB port on my computer

First, this is actually a good thing in a way. The reason is, it is actually telling you right up front that your USB bus is underpowered for this device. That's a huge improvement over issues caused by underpowered USB buses in the previous model computers. In those, we were left to having to figure out what the problem was when a USB device inexplicably stopped or didn't work.

What is happening is, your new external hard disk drive (HDD) is trying to run off of power taken from your laptop's USB "bus" (circuitry). This is OK for devices needing low power. But in the case of external hard disks, it's "iffy" whether there'll be enough power on the USB bus to support them. Particularly on laptop computers.

You need only attach an A/C adapter to your external hard disk drive (HDD) and you should be OK. If that is not an option, connect a **powered** USB hub to your laptop and plug the external HDD to the hub instead.

By "powered" I mean a USB hub that comes w/ an A/C adapter. In either case, using a powered USB hub or attaching an A/C adapter to your hard disk drive will remove the external hard disk's power load from your laptop's USB bus and provide sufficient power for the HDD to run.

You can find USB hubs at Newegg.com and lots of other online high tech stores. I like Newegg because their prices are competitive, their customer service is excellent and there're customer reviews of most of their products there as well.

if u are using a external hard disk case with the normal hard disk
try connecting your hard disk with a new casing.
if it is made as a external hard disk change the cable .
because after a few time usage the cable will not be quite good as new.
After inserting the usb cable in your pc if it shows any warning
information, or any message just give me that too for exact solution

Just an FYI for anyone else with a similar problem. I had my buddy look at it and it was discovered that the problem was with the power cord.
If your hard drive is still under warranty, call WD and ask that they send you a new power cord. It worked for me instantly.

This sounds like a mechanical failure in the drive but could also be a power or enclosure problem.
There are several thing to try, first make sure all the cables are connected properly. If you passport is the small size that fits in a shirt pocket it may have two connections at either end, make sure all ends are plugged in, if it's a full sized drive it will have a USB cable and a power cable,ensure both are plugged in and the light is on.

Once you have done this Right-Click on Computer or My Computer and select Manage. In the window that comes up you will see Disk Management, select it and wait a few seconds then look through the right hand side. The first drive listed will likely be your boot drive. If it shows up there but is unallocated report that back. If not take it to the PC store nearest you and ask the technicians to move the HDD in the passport to a new shell for testing, if that works buy the new shell.

If neither of these works the drive may be damaged, if you need the files that are on it and it seems to be damaged, report back here with your Country, State and City and I will locate the nearest Data Recovery pro and refer you in.
