One of the USB leads that attaches to the motherboard of my external harddrive has detached. How can I repair this? Is a replacement usb connector cable available that I can plug into the motherboard to replace the original?

This procedure is to extract the drive from the case..

1. The case is useless, dispose of it when you've extracted the drive. Attempting to reuse is pointless and could only cause more damage.

2. Make sure you disconnect ALL cables to the drive before you begin this.

3. You will need to be gentle as and shock or impact to the hard drive may render it useless, which would be unfortunate, considering it sounds as if the case is the issue, not the drive.

4. When choosing a new enclosure, go aluminum, and with no internal fan or psu. This just makes the environment hot and severe.

They cost slightly more than what is on the consumer market, but i use and recommend

Wiebetech TT4 or TTXE models, depending on whether the drive is PATA or SATA.

So to answer your question...

Yes, with a flat head screwdriver ( like a jeweler's ) and the drive on a book on its topside down. You can gently pry the bottom housing off about and inch from each corner. Upon prying up, you'l see the little slotted hole. There should be 4 metal fingers on both sides of the drive, screw in 2 on each side. Then remove the plastic contact guards, and gently pull up at the led light ( the power cable for the light should be running down the middle and is usually red or green. Once youve removed that, gentley put your hand on the drive, and with your other hand, flip the entire enclosure over. The drive should lightly fall out of the enclosure and into your hand......minimizing shock or movment of the drive, these things should be handled like babies..never shake.From here grasp the drive itself, and you will notice 2 cables binding the drive to the enclosure.The first is the data cable know as IDE or PATA and looks like a ribbon- more often yellow- second is the power cable known as MOLEX. The molex cable should be 4 wires..2 black, 1 yellow, 1 red. Ofcourse, be gentle when removing both Cables, as to not exert to much force so that it goes flying when its released. Once youve separated the 2, youll see that case for all its glory, or not. It's really a soda can with the cheapest components internally. Once the weight of the drive is out, there nothing to the box.

External drives tend to use power supplies at 12V DC and 1 amp or just a little bit over. You could read the output of the power supply with a digital volt meter. If you have power and the enclosure still refuses to turn on, you could buy another enclosure, another power supply, or just a naked USB to IDE adapter and pull the drive out of the existing enclosure.

Chances are, the drive you get out of the housing will never be going back into that case.

i too have had this problem and it generaly means it is broken. sometimes things can be done but it is very costly

It can be repaired just use a low heat soldering iron, and use heat sink clips, so that the heat will not
transfer and burn other components. make sure all power cords are removed from the board. use a
wrist ground strap to dissipate any static buildup that can damage components on the board. good luck!
