Large Hobart mixer, leaking oil?

* Model? Check side plate or post picture so I can check.
* Usually leaks are at the bearing seal(s). Replace.
* Frequent seal changes (less than 1-3 months). Replace bearings and seals.
* Check shaft near bearing seals for pitting (rust) that will damage seal. Remove and have a machine shop refurbish part. If possible; replace whole part and bearings. (or rebuild gear box.)
* Call your Hobart service rep for a quote.
* Check and replace lost oil as needed until machine is rejected (inspector, quality control, maintenance, etc.) Be careful oil does not get into food product.

Do I need to remove the kitchen aid rotor slicer/shredder shaft after each use?

I do, because if you don't, it can rust into place and become very difficult to remove from the attachments. (I'm guessing you mean from the slicer attachment, not the mixer itself, of course it should be removed from the mixer after use)

Have a KS55 mixer that has never been used -- sitting for about 4 years and went to turn it on and it makes a noticeable clicking sound in the lower speed settings (1-3). Noise goes away (or is not...

A lot of things can happen to a piece of machinery after 4 years of idling time.
Dust, moisture, rust and dry hard Grease are just few of the problems. The
good news is it's not hard to put it back into service again. Obtain a copy
of the Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com and start opening up the mixer.
Vacuum all dust inside, remove dirt and debris. Open up the Transmission
Housing and scoop out of the old grease. Use fresh Kitchenaid Food Grade
Grease for all gears including the Agitator (part of the Planetary Assembly) and
you are good to go.

Check on eBay. Sometimes you will find replacements--even new ones. You'll need the actual Model Number off the tag on your mixer (see link where to find that info).

Speed switch gone beserk

ANSWER

I have a K5-A, bought it for my S.O., she makes Krispy Cream doughnuts with it. The speed controller on a K5 has "originally" 2 return springs. They rust / break fall out the lower vents in the white cup that covers the rear of the machine. You can remove the cap with the removal of the lone screw at the top rear of the machine. Just gently work off the cap after the screw is removed. MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED FIRST!!! There is a funny metal flange thing that is mounted with two screws at the top on springs. This is esentialy the speed controle. It is actuated by a rod conected to the outside switch that runs up the bottom of the motor drive. You'll note the simple but effective off / on switch there. When the springs rot the funny flange thing does not return to its flat resting position and we have no low speeds. The springs attatch to the holes on eather side of the flange and stretch down to a post type mount below the speed mechanism. If you use a good light you can see and mount any small spring to these mounting points and the switch returns to rest and you have all speeds, a single light spring will work.................There, You, Go..........Reassemble.

Lever speed arm is frozen in the off position

hi i can see your problem there, if you can remove to top cover of your mixer its better cuz' you can see the slider on your speed arm spray it with WD40 rust remover, or any brand that you have wait up to 30 min' to 1 hr and try move slide arm if not try again puting some rust remover, and if it moves its better and then clean it with contact cleaner and if you don't have try lacquer thinner use brush. and dry it up to 2 to 3 hrs to be sure.

peace!
