Hp laptop, turns on, but only allows one mouse click, and then it locks up. The clock stops and does not respond. The only way to shut it off is using the power button. I have removed the battery and was able to shut windows down, but turning it back on is the same. I left it at home, and not sure of the model, but it is three years old, and never had a problems before.
Have you tried starting in SAFE MODE? If it's an overheating problem, then safe mode won't work either, but if you can start in safe mode, then it's not an overheating issue. If you can start in safe mode (press F5 as windows is starting and select safe mode without networking) and everything seems to work sort of normally - and expect the video resolution to be weird - then there is probably a program or driver that's corrupted and when it's loading, it's freezing your computer up. It could also be a virus.
You can see what's loading on startup by using a special program in Windows called msconfig. You can start this program from START|RUN (enter msconfig in the run dialog box) and from there you can see what's starting when you boot windows. You can selectively choose programs to start or not start when Windows boots. You can try to eliminate what's causing the problem.
If it's a driver problem, that can be a little more involved to sort out.

Have you looked at the ventilation? Computer freezing normally responds to the fact that the microprocessor is not being ventilated properly. Is it spinning when you turn it on? Try it and put your ear close to it to see if it is working.
