I have a cordless Dewalt 18V DW997. I can't remove the bit currently in the drill. When I hold the chuck and put it in reverse, everything just spins and the jaws won't open up to release the bit. What might be causing this and how can I fix it? The battery is brand new and it otherwise works fine.
I had this problem on my De Walt DW912- I simply couldnt turn the keyless chuck to remove the screwdriver bit and there was no obvious reason why.
I placed the unit on a solid surface so that the chuck/ drill bit was pointing vertical. I then used a mallet and a metal chisel to gently tap each of the 3 chuck jaws back into the chuck body. It worked!
Turned out that there was the absolute tiny amout of corrosion between the jaws, and the chuck and my tapping had just broken the siezure. I now remember that it started to rain slightly last time I used it.
Some spray release agent or perhaps WD40 would probably have done the same job but I wouldnt have believed so little corrosion could have done this so didnt realise this was the problem.

Loved my DeWalt drill until my husband started using it and tightening it so much that I couldn't get the bits out...ready to lock them up in my toolbox out of his reach...can you tell this isn't the first time this has happened? After my red hands started to burn I used a pair of latex gloves and it helped me grip good enough to finally loosen it so I could use another drill bit. Amazing how tools outlast husbands!

I tried pliers, its not locked and I know its not bent... It seems like something is not catching to matter which direction I put it in.
I cant remove fast bit it 18v dewalt drill i hold chuck in reverse but nothing loosens its a nightmare
make sure that the shift selector is in gear and hasn't jumped into "neutral" also try another setting if you have one.
Did you try putting the clutch ring setting into drilling mode, and then manually trying to undo the chuck? i.e. don't hold chuck and then pullt rigger to remove bit (shouldn't really do this anyway - convenient yes, not good for drill in long run and can be dangerous)
hold the chuck tightly with adjustable pliers yet? Is the chuck locked? The bit may have bent or jammed the jaws.
