Howling - Which is the correct fix

I too am experencing a intermediate howling noise coming from the lower freezer section of my 2 year old GE refrigerator (Model # GSC23LGQBB-WW). I have read posting here and on other sights that identify the problem as either the evaporator fan (Part # WR60X10185) or the control board that regulates that same fans speed (Part #WR55X10552). One is around $50.00, the other over $100.00 Before I order either one I'd appreciate help figuring out which one is the source of the howling, and if anyone has been successful in getting GE to provide the part/s at no charge. If so which of the several GE Customer Service #'s on thier website did you use to reach GE? Thanks! Sleepless in San Diego

After reasoning that the sound I was hearing was not the bearings going out on the evaporator fan, I choose to order the control board (Part #WR55X10552). It has been installed for about a week and the sound is long gone. Only time will tell if this is a long term fix, but so far, so good!

Thanks to everyone who offered their insights!

Have the same issue with a GE side by side. Almost ordered a control board then wound up letting the freezer defrost and fan cycling (howling) stopped for a few days. Right before letting it defost found a PDF GE service manual on line with troubleshooting and diagnostict. As far as I could tell everything checks normally on my fridge, the manual is for the same type side by side but for several models so some of it is generic.

After about a week the Howling started again, the dignostics included a computer reset proceedure so I ran the fan tests and reset the fridge 2 times and the howling has stopped again. Unfortunatetly we have all GE kitchen appliances and all of them have issues. Microwave fan makes noise, dishwasher gurgles and makes other strange noises. Because of this I don't recommend GE products. This is the manual.

Suggest a defrost with doors open over night, what often happens with this model is that you get an ice build up near the fan which causes an extremly loud noise, very common problem.

I think I have the same problem. The unit is also about 2 years old (GSH25KGRBB). I have an extended warranty. They already replaced the controller card. I see it is the exact part number you have mentioned. It seemed to help for awhile but I think it has gotten worse again. The noise is more consistent after they changed the board. Less revving up to "turbo" mode. Howling is a good description. I can hear it now, on the other side of the house. I would change the fan out. I think they did the board first because it probably is easier even if the part cost is higher. I will probably call them back again. This will be the third time. The first time they just changed the little flapper on the ice dispenser. Otherwise the unit cools and runs flawlessly.
