Shutter won't release

When I press the shutter the auto focus moves the lens back and forth but the shutter doesn't release. Not a battery problem. Sometimes the shutter releases if I insist but it sounds sluggish

I have the same problem with both my lenses 18-135mm and 70-300mm The shutter will will close and I have to push on the button again to get to see the picture and then the top 1/4 of the picture is black.

    My lens is a 18-135.

I accidentally fixed it by switching the AF setting to af-c.

Now I have to figure out why that worked. Thanks for your help.

Which lens are you using? Do you have another lens to try this with? If so, does it happen when using all lenses?

If the lighting is low and shutter speed is set for a long period of time its the function of the camera taking the picture. If it is a malfunction of the shutter take it in for cleaning you might have foriegn material stuck in your shutter mechanism
