Optical drives (cd/dvd) for the most part don't requires drivers in the sense other hardware does. That's why they work during boot.

Make sure it has power (ejects). Check Device Manager in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot. Right click My Computer > Manage. Select Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices. Now delete all DVD/CD-ROMs and reboot. Windows will say "New Hardware Found" and install. Check BIOS by pressing F key (correct F key is noted during boot) and make sure BIOS see's the Optical Drive.

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd-rom then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard or

My hp laptop cd rom is not detecting the cds. i want to formate my laptop.
Hi there, do not format now. Just try these.
Run the driver disk & install the CD/DVD driver. After finish the setup restart your pc or laptop. Hope that time your CD rom detecting the cds. But make sure, that your rom is working. Because if the cd rom is damaged then after formatting you can't install the operating system. May be your cd rom lens is damaged & that's why he can't read the cds or dvds. I suggest you Visit a service center & check the cd rom only. If you able to view the cd rom driver in side the my computer then, i am sure your vd rom lens is damaged.

your problem is very clear... your cd-rom is corrupted.. install new windows... NOTE-do this only if your cd drive is NOT displayed in my computer..

The driver for the cd rom is built into windows. If the cd rom is saying all cd loaded are blank then you have a damaged cd room. You will need to buy a cd rom lens cleaner to make sure the lens is clear of dust
