Can't Reset to preactivated factory stage(emergency call screen?)

See, I just got an iPhone (2G, not 3G) and I didn't activate it yet, so it was on the "emergency call" screen, right? I tried to unlock the phone but I guess I kind of messed up. Now I know how to unlock it, but since somehow I messed it up, it doesn't show the "emergency call" screen and just shows an iTunes screen which keeps flashing on and off. I try to make the iPhone do DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode so I can restore then unlock the phone, but it won't work. SO THE POINT IS, can you please tell me how to reset it back to the "Emergency Call" screen like it was in the beginning?
