You wouldn't normally expect the computer to detect a microphone plugged into the soundcard as new hardware - so don't get too excited about that particular symptom. Suggest you try a different microphone with the computer, and try the microphone with a different computer - preferably one which is working happily with a microphone of its own. This will help identify whether the problem lies with the microphone or the computer. If the computer looks like the problem, have a look in Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Audio tab, there's a Sound Recording panel, and pressing the Volume button on that gives you access to some controls for the microphone input. Make sure the checkbox for the microphone is ticked, then have a play with the fader. If you're sure the microphone is the problem, then I suggest you take it back and complain. A.
Afterthought: Just double check that this isn't one of those annoying microphones that needs you to keep putting batteries into it.
(Condenser mics need power to work. Most of the ones designed for use with computers take their power as a phantom feed from the soundcard, but microphones designed to be compatible with older tape recorders etc have a small battery - which invariably goes flat when you forget to switch the microphone off)

Hi, I have the same problem, taken all the above steps and it hasnt worked.
In the sound recording panel in the Sounds and Audio devices Properties I can click the volume button, but the advanced button is greyed out. Would this give a clue to the problem at all?
