After only a few minutes power up my mouse pointer migrates and parks in a corner of the screen, irrespective of use of keyboard 'nipple' or external mouse. Have replaced keyboard to no effect. Any suggestions please?
This is often a symptom of a malware infection; update your AV program, then run a full scan of your entire HDD. If you can't find the problem with your AV program, you have a second option. Open Internet Explorer, then open the housecall.trendmicro.com website and do an online scan of your system. You can also download Hijack This directly from there, in case you need it to remove something manually... Good luck; let us know what you find. This could be a REAL nasty problem, but with some time and patience, you should be able to resolve this without resorting to drastic measures.
I've been thinking about your problem, and did some extensive searching through the Micro$oft Knowledge Base at support.microsoft.com... I found this article, which MIGHT apply to your laptop, since you mentioned using an "external" mouse:

Please read through it to see if the symptoms you've encountered seem familiar to you...

Thanks for your continued interest in this problem. I have Sophos AV software installed and have run an up-to-date scan. In addition, I visited the Housecall site and ran a complete scan. No malware was detected by either means. The problem began with the keyboard pointing device which is why I tried attaching and using a USB optical mouse. The problem comes and goes on each device which is why I tended to think it might be a component problem intermittently playing up as it heated up or something. I will try disabling the touchpad as suggested by Microsoft however, and let you know the outcome.
