The contacts for the sim card may be dirty have a short ( was the phone dropped). Use a cotton swab and some contact cleaner (rubbing alcohol will work fine) and gently rub the contacts with the alcohol soaked swab. try inserting the sim card after the alcohol has had a chance to evaporate (about thirty minutes or so). [NOTE: the following may sound complicated and you may not be comfortable doing it - if this is the case then take it to a repair shop or get a friend who is inclined to to this sort of stuff] (I have done this several times and have had no ill results) If this does not help, use a (I think # t-5 or 6) star bit to remove the cover and casing. clean all the contacts with the alcohol (make sure you leave no strands of cotton behind), allow to dry and put it back together. After all this, and it still does not work I can only assume the controller board is damaged somehow.

First check your sim if theres any corrosion, if so try to clean with cloth or swipe it with your fingers.. hehe. if still not working replace it with other sim card. also, insert your sim to other phone. if still not ok, visit the service center nearest you..

I solved this with a few pieces of paper between the sim and sim holder. In other words let the sim holder put more stress on the sim, and thus on the reader contacts. This worked on three different Phones.
