When I press 'print' my new Canon Pixmz iP4600 it takes about 30secs before it starts to print. After printing, the print job remains in a queue for about 5 mins, preventing me from printing anything else.

This sounds more PC related than it does printer related. Your printer cannot determine when things enter/leave your print queue. I have seen that issues with several different printers and they all were PC related issues.
