Try is to lubricate the bar that the carriage treller travels on. also, paper jams can cause this problem, look for some small piece of paper focus in the paper path.

Hardware Error: 0502.
On the multi function machine seems to be a coating on the metal rod that the cartridges travel on. Just wipe this rod with a kleenex and the problem seems to go away. Please click on this link: then type in the printer model in the selection X6170 and then choose Lexmark X6170 and support page will open then you need Error type 0502 and you will get it trouble shooting steps...
Clean the rollers that the cartridges run on with a non-lint wipe (i use non scented baby wipes for all my printer work. The printer should now run fine. cheers lilacgerry xxx
I did as suggested by another poster, clean the area of travel(ribbon,travel bar, etc) with a clean damp cloth and now it seems the problem has corrected it self
so far anyways ........
