Chat with Somebody in Yahoo! Mail To exchange instant messages with any Yahoo! Instant Messenger or Windows Live Messenger user in Yahoo! Mail:

  • Make sure you are singed in to chat.
    • If Offline appears after your user name right next to the Yahoo! Mail icon at the top, click Offline and choose Available, Busy or Invisible from the menu.
  • Press c (think chat).
    • You can also select Chat from the Compose drop-down menu — click the down arrow first.
  • Type the desired user's Yahoo! Messenger ID in the To: field.
  • Hit Enter.
  • Type away.
You can also start a chat by looking for an online contact first:
  • Click Online next to Contacts in the Yahoo! Mail folder list.
  • Now click on the desired contact's name or user name.
  • Start typing.
If you start composing an email in Yahoo! Mail and the prospective email recipient appears under Online, Chat now! in the To: field's auto-complete list, select the entry to convert your email to an instant message.

Perhaps your account's ID has already been signing in into other medium of chats, per say Yahoo! Mail Chat? Sometimes when you open up Yahoo! Mail, it will automatically signing you into YMC (Yahoo! Mail Chat), unless it is turn off from the mail, the messenger will never interact with the same ID. Your yahoo messenger close when you open yahoo mail because on your yahoo mail the chat automatic sign in. For you to be able to sign-out that follow the steps below.
1. On the top page you will the see "Available" there is an icon "arrow down" click on that icon.
2. Click "sign out of Chat"
3. You will be offline for chat on your yahoo mail
4. Then sign in on your yahoo messenger.

How to use yahoo chat
First, you have to sign in to your yahoo account either through mail.yahoo.com(webmail) where the chat is integrated or if you have downloaded yahoo messenger in your computer, to sign in to it and start chatting and adding friends. To initiate chat, go to Actions>send an Instant message... then choose the username/type the username of the person you want to chat with.

yes! to chat without the software u can use your mail box, as yahoo mail beta comes with an integrated chat application where u can chat. it is on the left hand side when u log into your yahoomail inbox. or the best site to chat online using all your othet accounts is www.meebo.com just sing up there and use it to login to yahoo!
you can use other site like way2sms.com and many sites where u can login to your yahoo and gtalk chat.

There is no archiving with Yahoo! Mail chats. Only with Yahoo! Messenger standalone program and Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.

Can't stay signed-in to YM, always getting disconnected
You can only have one yahoo "Instant message capable" program open at one time. So if you move from Messenger to mail or chat you will get this message. If you want to have Yahoo Mail open with another Yahoo IM program you will have to set your status to "offline" in MAIL by using the dropbox next to your name ( all new mail) select "sign out of chat"
In Classic mail its located in the Inbox. Your online chat contacts will vacate the inbox until you make yourself "Available" again.
Yahoo classifies - Messenger - Mail - webmessenger - my yahoo - mobile phones - computers etc etc as different computers or devices - hence the confusion.

Yahoo IM opens when I open my mail
Hi,

This is a new feature that has been embedded into the new yahoo mail, so you could chat while on the mail box interface. It does offer flexibility for folks that would love to chat while on their yahoo box. Just some new innovations from the yahoo team. If you don't want this then click on arrow around the left hand side of your screen, it has "Chat" and "I am" under it. lick on the arrow and sign out, that would keep you signed off while you open your mail.
