The only remotes that work correctly with JVC is JVC. Some universals can do a couple of things, but 90 percent of your features will not work.

It sounds as though your remote is working fine. Since the storm coincided with your problem I would say that your receiver suffered a power surge that damaged the infrared receiver inside the unit. One other thing to try is to unplug the unit from the wall for about one minute, then plug it back in and try it. If that doesn't do the trick you will have to send it to a repair facility.
