Having the same problem as pmac re george foreman grill. The wire twists every time the lid is moved. Seems like a design fault. Buying new is tempting but what assurance same will not happen?.Encouraging the throw away society. Good for george foreman but not for the environment.
Sounds like the lid shorts the power or shuts it off, see if you can spot any faulty wiring. If you can't, you might try getting it to an electrician who should be able to solve it - but for $40 you could just as well get a new one.
