I have just managed to solve the problem I think. Try using the Fn key to turn off the number lock -- Hold down "Fn" and tap "F11". It seems number lock is on by default in some situations!
I found that pressing F12 & the Num lock / Scroll lock key beside it toggles the FN lock on and off on my laptop.
Hope that's helpful as it was driving me nuts for a while

Press Fn + Numlock. You have the number lock on, but laptops don't have a number pad. So it re-assigns these keys to overlay some existing ones. Once your number lock is turned off you should be ok.

Try holding fn key and hitting scroll lock or num lock to see if that does it. sounds like you have somehow locked your fn key on.
