MBR error

Question

My Compaq laptop is giving an MBR error.  I tried using Bootmaster software burned on a bootable CD and the laptop won't boot to the CD drive - keeps throwing the MBR error.  I did not test the CD on my desktop to see if it is indeed bootable.  Is this safe to try? Where do I turn next?

MBR = Master Boot Record
It could be that you have a bad hard drive.
Yes, test the CD in another computer (just abort the install after you establish it is ok).
It could also be that your BIOS may be having a problem (the can boot from CD).

How old is the laptop?
