1. check the obvious first:(check... don't assume)
a.everything is plugged in .. if possible test the speaker to make sure they're working
b. is your volume all they way up (or at least not all the way down).
c. click once on the speaker icon on your system tray (where the clock is) make sure you're don't have the sound muted or the volume is all the way down.
d. now double click on the speaker again and check the mixer volume control.. check items like master volume, wave, audio cd and others are not muted or with the volume all they way down.

2. if after doing step 1 everything check out ok you you may have a possible driver problem: note: if you see the speaker icon with a red cross (red cross means there's no driver for your sound controller) you need to check device manager for a possible driver problem, do check even if there's no red cross on the speaker icon as it may be a possible outdate driver (for device manager go to start>run> type devmgmt.msc then enter) and check if you have any ! or ? under sound devices. if you do unstill and reinstall drivers or better yet, download updated drivers from sound card manufacturer.

3. if you got upto step 3.. you may have a faulty sound card, get another sound card and test if it works. (this is unlikely but possible)
