Is there a version of linux and a set of configuration files and firmware known to work with the hp dv9005us? Particularly the integrated video which boots to an improper modeline and freezes up using most livecd distros that i've found (other than command line only ones) thanks.

Boot to ubuntu v16 first. push the try me.
other than that join a linux forum and ask, we are not linux here,
sounds to me like graphics issues.
hp uses many different GPU chips, and your pc came in vast numbers of sub models, that you did not state..
these service tag, see that, tell what it shows, and
we then look up what mobo it has and what GPU sits on it.
or your can your self.
http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx

type country first.
the model name, the pick, he nnnnnnn#aba number. there.
the we see what is inside.
with that 1 fact next we lookup that mobo, and its full HP spec.
then see what GPU chips is there.
and last go to to makers site for that chip, be it intel, nvidia or AMD/ATI and see it they ever did make linux driver.
if not, no hope exists.
is yes, then match it to distros.
this is the correct way, going backwards via 10000 distros.
not.
sorry.

reading us model spec pages it shows.
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (UMA)

this might be it. then again not.
be it known they come in sUBMODELS.

what i do , is not that ever. I use the PCI scanner tool to locate and ID the true
PCI name of the GPU., VEN= x, dev=z.
see this? costs is free, and safe.!http://pcdied.com/pci-101.html#SNiffer3

I would use Ubuntu or Mint Linux (a bistro based on Ubuntu). Your only issue might be the Broadcom wireless card but you can google how to turn it on in your distribution and get the answer.

Good luck.

Well the first thing I would try is to hook the computer up to an external monitor to check and see if the video controller itself is causing the problem.... If the same thing happens on the external monitor, then it's the controller hardware or the driver.... so to rule out the driver, download a different version of the driver for that card and install it. If the same thing still happens, then you should suspect the card itself, and yes, on a laptop the video card is integrated on the motherboard, so if it needs replacing, then you must swap the whole board. Hope this helps!
